Once
again, the conditions are ideal for me to have a good ride. It is a nice cool evening, and my body feels
great. I twist open an 8 ounce bottle of
Unbeetable and fill up my glass.
Unbeetable is dark and foreboding with an eerie resemblance to blood. Fortunately, it does not have the classic
smell of canned beets. I am not a beet
lover, or even a beet liker. I take a
sip. It is a bit too concentrated. I fill the remaining third of my glass with
sparkling water. Much better. It is now quite drinkable. I ingest the whole drink in a few large
gulps. I will begin my time trial in
about two hours. Two to three hours is
the suggested time to wait for maximum benefit.
Two
hours later, I am at the base of Elk Mountain.
Today, I hope to set a personal best over the Elk Mountain Time Trial
course outlined on my iPhone STRAVA app.
I also hope to move up in the STRAVA rankings. I strive to break into the top half of
recorded times. I begin the climb. I push myself hard throughout the whole ride. The pavement rolls by. On the final ascent, I find myself hyperventilating. Shaky, but undaunted, I reach the top. The ride felt good, but I felt good last week and ended up disappointed. I don’t let my hopes get too high.
On arriving home, I check out my recorded time on STRAVA: 32 minutes, 10 seconds! I have crushed my prior times by over a minute and half. I have set a new personal best, and my ranking in STRAVA for the Elk Mountain TT has risen from 314th place to 270th of 472 participants. Not quite in the top half, but I am pushing the envelope. Watch out Mr. King of the Mountain, here I come!
